I bought this to give my son haircuts because he would get upset when he got haircuts from haircuts places for toddlers. He still doesn’t like them, but at least there is no public spectacle. The money I saved has already paid for the clippers.

it’s alright. It feels good in the hand. The blades it comes with don’t get as close of a cut as others I have had. My kid dropped it on the tile floor and there was no damage.

Cuts great, very fast, feels heavy duty. I cut my hair every two weeks and expect this clipper to last 20 + years. Much better than my previous Andis clipper at the same price. The only downside is that it comes with only three guard sizes; 1/4″, 1/8″. and a blending shear-(close to a 1/16″)

This item was good at the start. However, as time went along I could hear a little rattle inside the razor. Almost like something broke inside. Shortly after, the thing just stopped working. Nothing to do with the battery. The concept was good, but they didn’t take it as far as they should have. It doesn’t work good on the sides of the head. They very easily could have had a straight blade on the opposite side. Don’t waste your money, unless you want to keep buying more in the future.

All About Hair Clippers

What Are Hair Clippers? Hair clippers are the small trimming appliances that allow consistent cutting and trimming (or, like the name, “clipping”) of short hair. Traditionally, hair clippers were manually powered, much like scissors. But now, electric clippers are used in homes, barber shops, and salons all over the world. They typically involve an internal motor that is powered either by a direct cord into an outlet, or by a rechargeable internal battery (that charges on a base that plugs into an electrical outlet).

How do hair clippers work? Several blades are moved back and forth quickly against a small comb, allowing for controlled cutting of individual hairs. The combs along which the blades slide can be changed (in most models). Often, hair clippers will come with as many as a dozen different combs, which changes and fine tunes the length the hair will be cut to. This allows for very specific styling around the head, rather than just cutting all the hair to one length.

Who sells hair clippers? Hair clippers can be bought online and in most department stores and well supplied drug stores, with online retailers able to provide the greatest amount of selection. The manufacturers of the most popular hair clippers include Wahl, Remington, Andis, Oster, and others.

How much do hair clippers cost? As with any appliance, the price runs the gamut from cheap to expensive. The lowest cost hair clippers run $15-$20, with the highest end, professional grade clippers bearing a $500 price tag. There are also hair clippers for animals, which cost more and can, in many cases, handle much larger amounts of surface area for larger animals.

Who uses hair clippers? Most people first encounter hair clippers at a barber shop or hair salon, and this is where most purchased clippers are used. But they are becoming quite popular for at home use, as well. Parents of young boys, or any man or woman with short hair who wants to keep well trimmed without making frequent trips to the salon or barbershop will appreciate the convenience of hair clippers. Increasingly, people are also using hair clippers in lieu of professional haircuts to save money and time.

Top Hair Clippers Manufacturers

Hair clippers are used in salons and barbershops, and by people at home, to trim hair cleanly and precisely. From a close buzz to a well balanced professional trim, having the right hair clippers, and knowing how to use them, is the essence of providing a great haircut. This is true for hair stylists and at home touch ups alike. Here are some of the leading hair clippers manufacturers, as well as what they sell.

Wahl

Wahl is one of the leading hair clippers companies, if not the very top of the line. Not only have they long been the leader, but they offer quality clippers for a variety of purposes. Their products are essential divided into three categories: consumer products, professional products, and animal products. Wahl makes hair clippers, trimmers, and shavers sold either individually or in a haircutting kit. They also offer products specifically for multi-cultural hair, and also have lines of massagers, women’s products, and styling products.

Remington

In addition to a huge line of hair styling products (such as straighteners, curling irons, and blow dryers), Remington also makes men’s grooming and shaving appliances, including hair clippers. One of Remington’s best hair clippers is actually part of an 8 in 1 grooming system, which can trim hair to 16 different lengths, including both wide and fine trimming. It also has a shaver and hair trimmers for nose, ears, and neckline.

Oster

Oster is an excellent brand, producing some higher quality hair clippers than many other brands. Oster’s hair clippers are divided into two lines, the Exclusive Salon System (or ESS) and O2: The Mark Of Excellence. Most popular is the Oster Classic 76, which runs around $125-$130. Known for small appliances, Oster also has a sister company that sells kitchen blenders.

Andis

Specializing specifically in hair clippers, Andis makes hair trimmers for professional, consumer, and small and large animal use. Generally, Andis hair trimmers are lower priced than some of the other leading brands, with the popular Andis 20140 clipper / trimmer combo pack usually costing under $30. Interestingly, the few products Andis makes outside of hair clippers include irons, hair dryers, and coffee pots, all for hotels.

With the economy in question, people are finding creative ways to ‘get back to basics,’ be more self sufficient and, ultimately, save money. Buying good hair clippers is a great way to do these things, and more. Here are five reasons to buy some hair clippers and learn to be your own barber.

  1. Save money. Of course this is reason number one. Some hair clippers are pretty expensive, but you can get plenty of quality by spending just $20-$50. If a men’s haircut costs $10, that’s just a few haircuts and you’re already saving money. If you have kids, even one round of haircuts will pay for the clippers. If you do your family’s haircuts at home for a year you could potentially save a couple hundred dollars.
  2. Save gas. This also goes under save money, but in a different way. With fuel prices in flux, the last thing you need is to drive across town for yet another errand. Cut your family’s hair at home with some affordable hair clippers and that’s several trips you’ll save. Every little big helps.
  3. Save time. This is huge. If you go to a “walk in” barber shop, you never know how long you’ll have to wait in line. And even if you make an appointment at a salon, everyone knows you’ll still have to sit and wait to get into the chair. Save time by eliminating the variable factor, and set your own haircut schedule. Plus remember, when you don’t have to drive to get there, that’s time saved, as well.
  4. Regular touch ups. Especially with kids, the difference between “you’re shaggy” and “you got your hair cut” is pronounced. Every time you take them in, it costs money (and gas, and time), so it’s understandable that parents tend to put it off a little. Using hair clippers to trim their hair at home means you can do regular touch ups whenever you like. They won’t be the shaggy kids, anymore.
  5. DIY Fun. Simply put, it’s fun to do things on your own. Just like baking cookies or building a deck, it’s a fun hobby and pass time to use hair clippers to keep your family looking great.

What To Look For In Quality Hair Clippers

If you have decided to buy hair clippers to use in your home, you are in good company. More people than ever are buying professional grade hair clippers. These allow you to trim your hair more often, keeping a clean and consistent cut, without having to pay a hair dresser (or visit one) regularly. The result saves time and, after several months, money.

But like every product, not all hair clippers are created equal. Here is a list of great qualities to look for in a pair of hair clippers. Depending on what you’re looking for, these may not all be as important to you as others. But they are good things to keep in mind when you look for a pair of hair clippers to purchase.

  • Attachment options. The comb attachments that come with your clippers play a huge role in what they are capable of doing. Ten attachments is a good number to look for. It allows for varying lengths and cutting styles and will ultimately mean your hair clippers can do everything you expect them to.
  • Size. You want hair clippers that are large enough to have a powerful and reliable motor, but not so large that they are cumbersome. Good clippers are small enough to travel with, and keep in a case in your drawer.
  • Versatility: wet vs. dry. Good hair clippers can cut hair when it is wet, try, or somewhere in between. Everyone has a different preference as to when their hair is cut, and you may want to try different things, so get clippers that can do both. Most new pairs that are any good should be able to do this.
  • Versatility: hair texture. Everyone’s hair is a bit difference, so it is important to have hair clippers that can accommodate different textures. There are some “natural hair”-specific clippers, and others that are just designed to handle a variety of textures.
  • Adjustable blade. Not all hair clippers come with an adjustable blade, but having one makes it easier and quicker to accommodate different lengths (rather than switching attachments).

Tips For Buying Hair Clippers

Buying hair clippers and cutting your own (or your son’s or husband’s) hair at home is a great way not just to save money, but to keep yourself neatly trimmed more regularly. You can buy anything from $15 hair clippers to full professional grade clippers that run as much as $500. Before you buy, think a bit about how you plan to use them and what you’re looking for. This should help make your purchasing decision a bit easier. Here are a few tips to keep in mind.

  • Will you trim your hair wet, or dry? There are hair clippers designed to do either, and other clippers designed to do both. If you’re not sure whether you prefer a wet or dry cut, if you plan to do some of each, or if you’ll be sharing the hair clippers with a family member who may prefer the opposite, then wet/dry clippers are the way to go.
  • Do you plan to travel? If you anticipate bringing your clippers with you when you travel, whether to stay neat and professional on a business trip, or along for a family vacation, then this might impact the design you choose. Some hair clippers are bigger and heaver than others. Smaller clippers are not only easier to bring in a suitcase, but take up less space in your drawer in general. Another travel consideration is how they are powered. Many hair clippers feature a hand held clipper that has a direct cord to the power socket, but some contain rechargeable batteries and rest on a base that plugs in. These are best for short term travel (like business) because you don’t need to bring the base in.
  • Will you be cutting varying lengths? Good hair clipper sets come with as many as 8-10 comb attachments, and really good hair clippers also have an adjustable blade. These make it easy to cut a variety of lengths, which helps give a better style to your cut.

These are just a few things to consider. Things like style, volume, and hair texture also play a role. Look around to get a sense of your options before you buy, and you should be well equipped to pick out exactly the right hair clippers for your needs.
